It feels almost inevitable these days; if you’re having a conversation about work, the term coworking is bound to come up. More and more people are coworking, and it’s a billion dollar business. Why are people so enamored with coworking, and where is it going in the future?

Why People Love Coworking

Coworking fits a need that has arisen in our work world. As technology becomes more integrated into our lives and work, it becomes less necessary for workers to be in a traditional office.

The definition and scope of work is also changing rapidly; companies hire fewer people than ever before and many traditional work benefits, like healthcare and pensions, are no longer offered to employees. So people have turned to freelancing in huge numbers. In 2016, 35% of the workforce were freelancers. Freelancers don’t have a company or an office to report to, but still want someplace that they go to to work.

Coworking offers some of the perks of an office - a defined space for work, the company of other people, a gathering spot for meetings and cups of coffee - but without the rules or pressure of an office.

Advantages of Coworking

Coworking has grown at such a rate that there is an option for everyone out there. Here are some of the top perks:

1. Pricing tiers: Most coworking companies offer pricing tiers where you can pay for a private desk or just for a general membership.

2. Flexible terms: Month to month leases are great for remote workers who move around a lot

3. Mail delivery: If you want your business mail to be delivered somewhere besides your home, you don’t need to pay for a PO box. Coworking spaces can handle that for you.

4. Different locations: If you’re a member at the Austin Impact Hub, you can stop into one of our locations anywhere else in the world. A member in one city is a member in another.
