Looking for a coworking space for next year? You’re in good company. Estimates predict that 40% of the American workforce will be freelance or independent contractors by 2020, and coworking spaces are growing to accommodate those people.

If you’re a remote worker or a freelancer looking for a co-working space, know that they are not all the same. The co-working space you work at should facilitate great work, help you be more productive than working at home, and create an atmosphere that you enjoy working in.

Here’s our list of the top 10 things to look for in a co-working space.

1. A welcoming atmosphere

Do you feel welcomed by the staff and the other people working there? Do you feel comfortable and at home?

2. Opportunities to get involved

Does the space host networking events and happy hours? Do you get to meet other people working there?

3. Other companies working there

Is this space a tech hub, or targeting small and local businesses? Find one that meets your needs and will compliment your business type.

4. Open hours

Are you a night owl or an early bird? Find a space that caters to when you work best.

5. Amenities.

Do they supply coffee or snacks? Do you have access to a refrigerator to store food in?

6. Price.

Do they have a sliding scale? How long does the contract run for?

7. Internet speed.

We all spend a lot of time on the internet; what’s their capacity and will it work for your business?

8. Location.

Is this a manageable commute for you? Are there things in the area that you also need, like a gym or a favorite lunch spot?

9. Trial period.

Can you try before you buy? Do they offer a free day of co-working?

10. Space options.

Do they have offices for individuals or a small team? Is it an open area?

Finding the right co-working space can take time. Consider it from all angles before you make the final decision. This will be your place of business, so you want it to be productive and comfortable for you.
